About Jillian

My Qualifications

I have been a Neurodiversity advocate, Autism & ADHD coach, consultant, and tutor in Manitoba since 2017.

I have a Social Services diploma and a degree in Psychology, as well as over 20 years' experience in the social services and mental health fields.

My son and I are both neurodivergent and twice (or thrice!) exceptional: both Autistic and gifted with ADHD. I offer a unique combination of personal, professional, and academic experience.

My Philosophy

My philosophy aligns with the social model of disability and the neurodiversity paradigm (hence the name).

The neurodiversity paradigm see divergent neurotypes as a benefit to our society in many ways, including innovation, creativity, divergent thinking, and artistic talents, among many others.

My primary focus is meeting the needs of the individual. It is not my goal to change a person, or "fix" their neurodivergence; rather it is to help people embrace their uniqueness, and develop strategies for managing life's challenges.

How I Provide Support and Education

What I do

  • Get to know your family and understand your individual needs, goals, and strengths.
  • Learn what accommodations or supports might be helpful to enhance those existing strengths.
  • Provide tools and strategies for managing challenges.
  • Educate and provide information about specific divergent neurotypes, how they impact people's lives, and what accommodations and adaptations may be most helpful.
  • Advocate for your family to ensure your needs are being met: at school, home, in your community, and in the workplace.
  • With permission, I will network and communicate with any other professionals involved with your family, to provide consistent, collaborative services.
  • Provide services in a manner that respects each person's autonomy, individuality, and freedom of expression.

What I don't do

  • I do not utilize reward-and-punishment behaviour therapies, nor any type of coercive approaches.
  • It is not my goal to teach a neurodivergent person how to be neurotypical, nor is it my aim to "fix" people.
  • Instead, I work from a respectful, person-centred, neurodiversity-affirming approach.
  • The needs of the individual are prioritized over the needs of institutions, and I advocate for reasonable accommodations.
